This Community: Portraits series is a project begun as a way of learning my neighborhood, who lives here, what do they look like. These are just some of the people who occupy those places and spaces in the Community: Landscape gallery. Some images are digital, some are film. Portraits has a companion gallery called Community: Landscapes. It is also a jumpstart for another gallery called Mumble Street Stories.
This Landscape series is a project begun as a way of realizing where I am, what does this place look like. I found that I take particular joy in those places in between the larger structures in my community. Some images are digital, some are film. It is also a work in progress as I will add and delete images as I can. Community: Landscapes has a companion gallery called Community: Portraits.
Personal Interiority is a continuing series where I create maps back to moments that perhaps happened in my life or didn't. Either way, when I create them I get to revisit them as often as I'd like.
Mumble Street Stories is a project my colleague and friend Gavin Mahaley and I began to adventure through the world with eyes wide open. It is a collection of interviews and portraits of interesting people we meet. It is a first person account, a primary source document. It is rich and it is a beautiful collection of stories.
Eyes Closed is an exploratory look at a different type of silence. There is enough noise in the world day to day. Asking my subjects, strangers to me, to close their eyes allows both them and me a moment of contemplative silence. There is also a presence of trust on their part to allow me to study them in silence and take their photograph. I imagine the silence as empowering.
The MLS champion Portland Timbers opened the season at Providence Park with a 2-1 win over the team they defeated to win the MLS Cup, the Columbus Crew.
I use this as sort of a blog. As I make it out of the house from my day job - online teaching - I head out to the trees, occasionally the beach, and look for something beautiful.
A sampling of head shots in studio and on location, some creative and some rather straight forward.
